Visitors to the National Forest in Leicestershire can take advantage of a range of new value for money short break offers. The National Forest is an emerging, multi-purpose and sustainable forest covering 200 square miles of the counties of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

Over seven million trees have already been planted and a wide range of outdoor activities are available to visitors from walking, cycling, tree planting and bushcraft, through to historical sites such as the Moira Furnace and the interactive family attraction at Conkers.

To encourage visitors to extend their stay and take in more of these activities, Leicester Shire Promotions and the National Forest Company have teamed up with local accommodation providers including Measham House, Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel, Ramada Tamworth and the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) to offer some great accommodation rates from just £49 prpn (per room per night). More details of the short break offers and how to book can be found at goleicestershire.com/shortbreaks/national-forest-short-break.asp

Sophie Churchill, Chief Executive of the National Forest Company said: “At the heart of the country, The National Forest is perfectly placed for the growing number of people looking for active and 'green-conscious' short breaks. This landscape is changing before our eyes: the Forest is full of hidden gems, and has something for everyone to enjoy. A few days amongst the young trees and spending time in the older, quintessentially English countryside will provide the perfect break and lift the spirits.”

Martin Peters, Chief Executive of Leicester Shire Promotions, added: “With the increasing interest in sustainable tourism, The National Forest offers a remarkable natural area in which to relax and unwind in stunning countryside. From a gentle stroll through to more energetic pursuits, it is a unique setting for visitors who love the great outdoors.

“These short break offers will provide people with a value for money opportunity to extend their stay and enjoy more of The National Forest and the surrounding Leicestershire area,” continued Martin.

From 16-25 May 2009, visitors can take part in The National Forest Walking Festival and enjoy the scenery of this beautiful part of Leicestershire. Guided walks of varying levels are planned throughout the festival, enabling visitors to take in expert information on the surrounding countryside. A wide range of cycle routes are also available throughout The National Forest. You can hire bikes locally or book in advance online.

From just £15 visitors can explore the wonders of Green Woodworking and try their hand at willow weaving, have a go at cleaving wood, or turn a chair leg on a pole lathe. These activities are part of a series of half-day bushcraft sessions and are aimed at all ages. Visit Greenwood Days at greenwood-days.co.uk for dates in 2009 and to book.

Short break visitors to The National Forest can also contribute to the preservation of the environment by planting a tree and helping to offset your carbon footprint. Visit nationalforest.org/sponsor/plantatree for further details.
