Papa Haydn: Take a backstage glimpse

Follow the footsteps of Joseph Haydn as the world of classical music commemorates the 200th bicentennial of this famous Austrian composer. We still have some places available for individual research trips to Austria. Take a backstage glimpse and enjoy his music in the buildings where he lived and worked, and uncover some of the secrets of his prolific career.

Visit the farmhouse in Rohrau, Lower Austria, where he was born, and where you can also see the restored Hammerflügel (fortepiano), on which Haydn is said to have played.

Meet the private citizen and businessman Joseph Haydn, brought back to life at the ‘Haydn House’ in Eisenstadt, Burgenland. He used the privacy of this house to compose many of his works.

Look behind the scenes of the extraordinary friendship between Haydn and Mozart, forged over many years in Vienna. After taking in a concert, dine in true baroque tradition at the Piaristenkeller Restaurant on dishes such as cream of pheasant soup and exquisite braised beef, which Haydn and his young friend Mozart so much enjoyed.
