Festival celebrates wild flowers in Slovenia For anyone interested in wild flowers – including how to cook with them - the third International Wild Flower Festival between 23rd May and 6th June, near Bohinj in Slovenia’s Triglav National Park, is the perfect opportunity to find out more.

The ‘Wild Flowers in the Kitchen’ workshop, with celebrity Slovene chef and author, Dario Cortese, is just one of a number of interesting and unusual events that will be held during this special fortnight dedicated to celebrating the area’s natural beauty.

Located north-west of Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, Bohinj is characterised by several different altitude levels that give rise to rich and widespread flora, which in turn attract a diverse number of butterflies and bees. When Spring comes to the Triglav National Park the countryside is awash with an array of wild flowers that speckle the valley floor, mountain meadows, wetlands, moors and forests with a rainbow of colour.

Visitors to the International Wild Flower Festival can find out everything they ever wanted to know about alpine flora and more. The event includes photographic, art and embroidery exhibitions, guided botanical tours (in English) to the lake, waterfalls, and mountain pastures of Bohinj, traditional hay cutting demonstrations, cookery classes, gourmet nights with wild flowers on the menu, craft shows, concerts and children’s workshops. Some events are free while there is a charge for others and workshops need to be pre-booked in advance. For more information, visit bohinj.si/alpskocvetje/eng/index.php.

Prices for a week’s holiday in Pr’Gorjup Farm – new for 2009 - start from £546 per person based on two people sharing and include flights from Stansted, car hire and seven nights’ bed and breakfast accommodation. Pr’Gorjup is situated on a glorious wooded mountain plateau close to Lake Bohinj, with wonderful panoramic views across the valley.
