Surf Academy launches at Perranporth

Surf Academy launches at Perranporth Over 60 people were treated to a free surf lesson at Perranporth, Cornwall last Saturday 13th June for the official launch of the new Ticket to Ride Surf Academy.

With sun, waves and a crowd of budding surfing enthusiasts, the day set off to a good start at 9am with almost 20 people in the first session ready to brave the early morning waters.

After a series of five free surfing sessions and a high and a low tide, the day closed in good spirits with a sunset BBQ at Seiners Hotel next door to the Ticket to Ride Surf Academy HQ.

The Ticket to Ride Surf Academy was set up to bring something fresh to the 'learn to surf' market in the UK offering a range of taster sessions as well as more complete ‘up and riding’ packages for those that want to really grasp the basics and continue to surf independently. Additionally the Ticket to Ride Surf Academy also plays host to the Perran BoardRiders, a non-profit organisation aimed at guiding and nurturing young surfers at all different levels through regular meetings and social events.

Coaching Director Sam Miller says “It’s been a great day and it’s refreshing to see so much enthusiasm and talent from all different ages. Almost everyone managed to get to their feet, even those without any previous surfing experience. At low tide we had some big waves coming through and the conditions weren’t easy but this didn’t deter anyone. It just goes to show that surfing can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone who doesn’t mind getting wet."

The launch of the academy was also well attended by past riders from the Ticket to Ride “Worldwide Surf Adventure Courses” that specialise in offering Gap Year and Mini-Gap surf adventure courses to South Africa, Mozambique and Costa Rica. Many of these past riders are now qualified surf instructors and beach lifeguards in Cornwall and Devon having completed the Ticket to Ride instructor’s course in South Africa.

Sam concludes “The Ticket to Ride Surf Academy caters for locals, visitors and also the ever growing groups and school market. More recently companies have been looking to take their employees on a less traditional work day out and surfing is a brilliant escape, especially when there is so much doom and gloom all over the newspapers".
