Tenerife tees up for ladies open Tenerife is on course to host its most spectacular Tenerife Ladies Open taking place in Costa Adeje from the 24 – 27 September 2009. Over 120 professional players representing 25 different nationalities will attend the event, with the ultimate goal of winning the grand prize of Euros 300,000.

Now in its eight year it has become one of the most prestigious events of the golfing calendar attracting elite players from all over the world. Co-sponsored by the Tenerife Tourism Corporation, Canary Government, Spanish Tourist Board and Iberostar Anthelia, this year’s official host hotel, the event’s success has helped showcase the vibrancy and attractions of the island and increase visitor arrivals.

All the action takes place on the beautiful Costa Adeje Golf Course. Located in the south of the island overlooking the sea, this spectacular course was designed by José Gancedo and opened in 1998. It was originally the site of banana plantations and slopes down toward the Atlantic Ocean, featuring terraced fairways framed by old stone walls. Recently enhanced modifications include a new green for practice play, and the replacement of the black sand bunkers with fine white silica sand from Cadiz.

The Golfing week kicks off on Monday 21st September with two days of official training. On Tuesday 22nd, there is a welcome cocktail event at Siam Park and on Wednesday 23rd, the PRO-AM tee-off for golf tour operators and press. This is followed by four days of competitive play, culminating with the prize giving ceremony on Sunday 27 September.

Defending her title will be British Golfer Rebecca Hudson who won in 2008. Previous winners have included Nikki Garret (2007), Riikka Hakkarainen (2006), Ludivine Kreutz (2005), Diana Luna (2004), Elisabeth Esterl (2003) and Raquel Carriedo (2002).

Antje Groch, International Promotions Director for the Tenerife Tourism Corporation comments, “Once again we’re delighted to be hosting the Tenerife Ladies Open and look forward to showcasing our wonderful island and stunning Costa Adeje Golf course to golf players from around the world. With our year round sunshine, incredible scenery, culture, cuisine and wealth of attractions, we are truly an island of contrasts offering visitors a perfect blend of holiday experiences.”

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and is served by several airline carriers from multiple airports across the UK and Ireland. Flight time is approximately four hours and its year-round warm and temperate climate make it one of the most popular short haul destinations for UK visitors. The island is home to Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide, which is located within its own national park. This, together with its many beaches and contrasting regions of north and south, provide visitors with a wide choice of holiday experiences.
