Half term fun in Pennine Yorkshire

This October half-term why not head to Pennine Yorkshire? Whether you want a fun-filled family break or simply an exciting day out visiting one of the many child-friendly venues, this beautiful area of West Yorkshire has something for all the family.

Visit the free-to-enter, National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield, which gives kids the chance to see what is was like at the coalface. With underground tours by real coal miners, interesting galleries, and the ‘Hope Pit’ – an onsite complex with interactive displays and multimedia exhibits – kids can follow the sensory trail and see science come alive. What’s more the museum’s half mile nature trail ensures there is always something different to see both indoors and outdoors.

Or how about the critically acclaimed, Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield, an extraordinary place that sets out to challenge, inspire, inform and delight. With four indoor galleries and 500-acres of 18th century parkland, it is one of the world's leading open-air modern and contemporary art galleries, presenting a changing programme of international sculpture exhibitions there is always something different to see.

Eureka! The National Children's Museum, in Halifax is designed to inspire children to find out about themselves and the world around them through hands-on exhibitions. Eureka! is an award-winning attraction and educational charity for children.

Take a journey through Bronte Country and bring the world famous novels to life with the sounds and smoke of a steam engine, on a trip on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway - home to the UK’s oldest working railway carriage. Board the Keighley to Haworth train then follow the footpath to visit the Bronte Parsonage Museum where there is currently a Wuthering Heights exhibition displaying costumes from the adapted TV show.

If you are a family of adrenaline seekers, explore the great outdoors in Pennine Yorkshire. Try a guided walk through Hardcastle Crags at Hebden Bridge with its 400-acres of unspoiled woodland area. Or visit Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre, which is home to the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the country.

East Riddlesden Hall is a fantastic 17th Century manor house and a great hit with kids oozing with history and great things to see and do. It’s home to the celebrated Airedale Heiffer Playground and boasts a charming country garden, grass maze and duck pond. What’s more, it was used as a film location for the adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights in 1992.

The National Media Museum in Bradford is a fantastic free day out devoted to film, photography, TV, radio and the web. Take a journey through popular photography; visit IMAX, the world's most powerful giant screen experience; discover the past, present and future of television in Experience TV; play with light, lenses and colour in the Magic Factory and explore the world of animation and watch a real animator at work in the Animation Gallery.

Oakwell Hall Country Park and Countryside Centre is an Elizabethan manor house that has delighted visitors for centuries. The formal 17th century garden has recently been restored, with box hedging planted in geometric patterns, inspired by the wood and plaster designs inside the Hall. Beyond the gardens are 100 acres of Green Flag award winning country park featuring a visitor centre, cafe, adventure playground and nature trail.
