New guides help walkers discover UK’s best kept secrets

18th December 2007 Print
Handy 'walking packs' brimming with hints and tips, a new 54 page outdoors guide, and a new dedicated website section are bringing Lincolnshire alive for walkers.

From spring 2008, those looking for a taste of the great outdoors will be spoilt for choice thanks to the launch of the new guides, covering walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits.

Topping the county's walking hotspots is the Lincolnshire Wolds, one of England's best kept secrets, and perfect for walkers, with a host of way marked routes and countryside paths.

But increasingly the Wolds is also becoming a destination for those searching for a therapeutic or creative break - offering everything from yoga to painting.

Now Lincolnshire Tourism is launching a new full colour outdoors guide and a series of comprehensive walking packs, which offer a great way for visitors to learn more about walking, cycling and relaxing in Lincolnshire.

Available from Spring 2008, they will be supported by updated website sections on one-stop tourism portal Visitlincolnshire.com.

Designated an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1973, the Lincolnshire Wolds offers a landscape of chocolate box villages and sweeping open grassland dotted amidst rolling chalk hills, that inspired one of our greatest ever poets, Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the Wolds offer tranquility, peace and relaxation amongst the unspoilt countryside. Visitors can nurture both body and mind with a host of creative and therapeutic breaks including yoga, reiki and painting.

However for those with a little more get up and go, the rolling hills and big skies also provide the prefect backdrop for getting active. Whether it's walking, fishing, cycling, horse riding or even motor sports, the Lincolnshire Wolds has it all.

The area is a walker's haven - it offers some of the most unspoilt walking terrain in the whole of the UK. From leisurely strolls and hillside ambles to more serious treks. More adventurers walkers can also tackle part of the famous 130 mile Viking Way, that stretches from the Humber Bridge through Lincolnshire and on towards neighboring Rutland.

Or why not join the increasingly popular Lincolnshire 'Wolds Walking Festival', which takes place each year over the last two weeks in May? With more than 50 organised routes laid on for all ages and abilities, this is a fantastic event for anyone with an interest in walking or the outdoors.

Horse lovers can find some wonderful riding on the ancient tracks and quiet country lanes, and there are even self catering apartments where you can take your horse on holiday. For cyclists The Wolds lie on the renowned Hull-Harwich cycle route, or for something slightly less strenuous there are a number of circular rides such as the 21 mile Lincolnshire's Poachers Country route.
