Winter breaks in Germany – exactly what you’re looking for

30th January 2008 Print
Cities, slopes and spas – travellers looking for a varied winter break should head for Germany this season. The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) highlights the country’s potential for winter and early spring holidays with a difference, starting with a tube poster campaign at 600 sites all across London plus a giant poster up on Cromwell Road.

The campaign is launched in cooperation with Lufthansa, the Germany Embassy in London and the Munich Tourist Office. Numerous of the altogether 300 German winter sports resorts are located in the Bavarian Alps, offering a huge variety of indoor and outdoor pursuits such as skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, hiking, Nordic Walking and spa centres.

Bavaria’s capital with its Baroque town centre, spectacular modern architecture sites such as the new BMW World, world-class cultural offers and fancy shopping opportunities offers special winter packages such as the “Three for Two” at the Apart Hotel where a three-night stay in a double room including breakfast, welcome drink, public transport ticket and a Bavarian Platter at a local brewery starts from EUR 99.50 per person (until 29 February 2008).

From Munich it is just an hour’s drive to the skiing and outdoor resort of Spitzingsee (season until 27 March 2008). For EUR 34, visitors can get a one-day return ticket for the coach ride from Munich to the resort and back, a ski pass for the day and 10 percent discount on ski gear and/or skiing school. For the more culturally inclined traveller the artist town of Murnau, home of Kandinsky and the Blue Rider movement, and the picturesque Passion Play village of Oberammergau are another option. With the “Bavarian Ticket” from Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) all can be done in one day for EUR 19 or EUR 27 for up to five persons.
