Take a hike – To Scotland VisitScotland has created another stunning edition of the popular walking guide to help visitors plan a walking holiday in Scotland. Walking is a key activity for visitors to Scotland with walkers forming an important source of income for the Scottish tourism industry. 37% of UK visitors to Scotland indicated that they enjoyed some walking as part of a holiday to Scotland.

Walking is an activity undertaken by almost 5 million UK visitors to Scotland with these visitors generating over £1 Billion in tourism revenue.

Walking in Scotland can be undertaken by everyone and the guide gives detailed information and route maps for 54 great walks, information on long distance routes, walking events and festivals, accommodation and outdoor access. The dedicated VisitScotland walking web site includes more than 900 walking routes, 59 walking operators and the walkers welcome scheme has 1300 members across Scotland.

In the guide, some famous faces, including Nick Nairn, Charles Kennedy and Jenni Falconer talk about their favourite Scottish walks, views along the way and their walking companions.

TV Presenter Ben Fogle describes his favourite Scottish Walk:

“My favourite Scottish walk is on St. Kilda. It has been described as the UK’s Macchu Picchu and it certainly has a magical feel to it. I would go so far as rating it in the top ten walks in the world. My favourite view along the walk is behind the Street on the north western cliffs. Reputed to be the highest in Europe, the Atlantic stretches beyond it for thousands of miles.”
