Major milestone achieved by Walkingworld.com
Walkingworld, the popular online walking guide, has passed the 4,000 mark for walks in Britain, with another 150 plus in France and Spain.Walkingworld founder, David Stewart, says, “Reaching 4,000 walks in England, Wales and Scotland is another great milestone for us. Every one of those walks has been submitted to the website by a Walkingworld member. It demonstrates the power of using people’s local knowledge to provide helpful information to other members.”
Dave continues “In effect every one of our members has a walking friend in practically every corner of Britain, ready to show them the best walks in their area.”
Walkingworld has grown dramatically since its inception in 1999 and launch in early 2000. The website was one of the first to embrace the concept of user generated content. As it reaches its eighth anniversary the number of registered members exceeds 120,000.
Over 300 members from all round the country have contributed walks to the website and many thousands more have helped maintain that content by submitting changes, new photographs and additional information. Walk routes are created using a distinct format with photographs at every major decision point and a 1:50,000 Landranger scale Ordnance Survey map with those waymarks marked on it.
David Stewart adds: “Walkingworld has become a vibrant community which reflects the passion people feel for walking and the countryside generally. It shows that people are more than willing to share their favourite routes with others, as long as you give them the right platform on which to do it.
“4,000 routes only scratch the surface of the possibilities in Britain; we expect Walkingworld to continue growing for a long time yet.”
