Escape Euro Cup fever in Franche-Comte

14th May 2008 Print
Disappointed British football fans longing for a boys holiday to keep away from other smug European supporters can opt for Franche-Comté this summer. Head to the region to enjoy an alpine break without the agro.

Situated on the border with Switzerland, this region of Eastern France boasts pristine mountainous scenery, the largest numbers of trees in the whole of France, and many waterfalls making it a great choice for a relaxing break with no opposing team’s football shirts in sight!

A wide range of activities is available including canyoning and climbing for adrenalin junkies or cycling and walking for less adventurous visitors. The Peugeot Museum in the north of the region is another favourite boys’ haunt with classic cars dating back to the beginning of the brand.

Fondue fans will not missed out on cheesy specialities either. They can tuck into regional staples including deliciously nutty Comté cheese and Morbier. Local cheeses are best with a glass of local Vin Jaune or followed by a drink of Absinthe or Kirsch for digestion.

The region is easily reached with many shorts flights into Basel and Geneva available from various UK airports. It has never been easier to holiday in the Franche-Comté Mountains away from the football crowds, hooligans and riots!
