An inspiring performance, an inspiring place

Andy Murray served up an inspiring performance at Wimbledon this week. Now Britain’s number one tennis ace reveals his most inspiring places and favourite experiences when chilling out in his home country of Scotland.

Brought up in the spa town of Dunblane, Murray’s list of inspiring places in Scotland includes the views from the nearby Wallace Monument as well as golf classics like The Old Course in St Andrews and Gleneagles. Other favourite pastimes include watching Hibernian FC play at Easter Road, playing at Edinburgh’s Craiglockhart Tennis Centre where he won his first Scottish junior title and karting at Knockhill.

“I love spending time at home, which does not happen often nowadays, so when I do get the chance I like to revisit old hangouts like Craiglockhart Tennis Centre, the only clay court venue in Scotland and of course Easter Road where I started playing for Hibs kids when I was five.

Andy Murray’s Grand Slam of Inspiring Scottish Places

• Craiglockhart Tennis Centre, Edinburgh - the only clay court venue in Scotland and where Andy won his first Scottish junior title.
• Golf At Gleneagles – he learned to play on the 9 hole par 3 course there when he was tiny and enjoyed cycling around the grounds.
• Hibernian FC - supporting Hibs at home matches at Easter Road. Andy was a member of Hibs kids between the ages of 5-8.
• Braehead Arena - played Davis Cup match v Serbia here in March 06 and also watched first live boxing match here.
• The Wallace Monument - loved the Braveheart movie and enjoys the views from the top of the monument followed by great pizza at Corrieri’s Cafe at Causewayhead afterwards.
• Edinburgh Dungeons
• The Himalayas putting green on the sea front at St Andrews. Andy thinks this is a great course that is really challenging.
• Landmark Centre Carrbridge - great flying fox and climbing frames.
• Hard Rock Café – Edinburgh
• Go Karting – Knockhill

Inspiring places in Scotland is the theme behind a new advertising campaign targeting Greater London commuters during July. Running until 27 July, the joint promotion by VisitScotland and Highland Spring includes a colourful collection of iconic Scottish landscapes, which will feature in 335 train and tube stations across Greater London.
