Holidaymakers urged to remember travel insurance

Have you ever travelled abroad or at home without holiday insurance? One male aged 85 did just that and found himself faced with a bill of £77,000, a survey by Insurefor.com discovered.

The unlucky traveller was on holiday in the USA when struck down with pneumonia and other complications. His medical and repatriation costs totalled £77,000, all of which could have been avoided by taking out an over 80’s travel insurance policy for approximately £100.

The survey by travel insurance broker Insurefor.com discovered that travellers are increasingly not taking travel insurance to save on costs. Almost a third of those questioned were considering travelling without insurance.

This shocking new trend is a short term saving that could cost holidaymakers thousands, yet they continue to travel uninsured.

Accidents and injury are the biggest issue with travellers sustaining all types of injuries while abroad. Costs are so high that it could wipe out savings or in more extreme cases even your home!

Insurefor.com has released some frightening examples of costly claims that have affected travellers of all ages:

• An uninsured male aged 18 spent £12,000 on medical surgery from a spinal fracture
• A female aged 32 suffered cardiac problems in Turkey and was presented with a bill in excess of £20,000
• Male aged 42 suffered a broken hip and leg in Cyprus and the bill exceeded £15,000
• Male aged 55, travelling in the USA, spent £45,000 when experiencing cardiac problems

These are just a few examples of the sums of money that real travellers have faced and if you don’t want to find your self in a similar situation this summer the advice is take out an insurance policy.
