Mauritius awarded second UNESCO World Heritage Site

3rd September 2008 Print
Mauritius has further strengthened its reputation as a world-class cultural destination by being granted a second UNESCO World Heritage site. Le Morne Mountain, in the south west of the island, was voted onto the UNESCO World List by the 21-member World Heritage Committee at its annual meeting in July.

A rugged mountain, jutting into the Indian Ocean, Le Morne was used as a shelter by bands of runaway slaves during the 18th and early 19th Centuries. Le Morne’s striking and isolated landscape proved to be the perfect protection for the escaped slaves, who formed settlements in the mountain’s caves and summit. Since this time, Le Morne has become a symbol of the slaves’ fight for freedom particularly relevant given Mauritius’ multi-cultural heritage.

Destinology (destinology.co.uk) is offering seven nights at the four star Indian Resort & Spa in the Le Morne region from £1,349 per person. This price includes return economy class flights with Air France from London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Southampton and Newcastle via Paris and accommodation in a superior marine room on a half board basis. Valid for travel between 1 – 30 September 2008.
