West Virginia opens its country roads for UK tourism John Denver’s “Country Roads Take Me Home” ballad sets the scene for travellers to the American state of West Virginia as a new representation office opens in the UK. Highlighting outdoor adventure, ranging from white water rafting, hiking and mountain biking as well as fishing, golf and driving tours, this relatively unknown state offers stunning and dramatic scenery, particularly in the autumn.

Nearly 80% of the state is forested with 2,000 miles of streams and rivers, 36 state parks and seven state forests, forming a scenic landscape for tourism.

Luxury resorts include the Greenbrier, Glade Springs, and Snowshoe Mountain Resort all of which have benefited from recent million dollar investment refurbishments and expansions as well as quaint B&Bs and guest houses in the small towns and byways offering the real hometown American hospitality.

With over 100 golf courses throughout the state, it is also home to America’s oldest golf club at Oakhurst Links, where golf today is played the old fashioned way with wooden clubs and gutta-percha balls.

West Virginia is conveniently located within an hour’s drive from Washington DC, as well as regional access into its capital city Charleston from a number of US gateway cities. It is also served by two Amtrak routes through the state, the Capitol Limited and The Cardinal.
