The Sultanate of Oman has launched the world's fastest diesel-powered passenger ferry, directly linking the country's capital Muscat with the northern most peninsula, Musandam. The £16 million ferry named Shinas, after a coastal town in northern Oman, is the first of a fleet of five high-speed vessels that will improve access to the more remote areas of Oman for residents and tourist alike.

The ferry between Muscat and Musandam takes six hours and will allow passengers to enjoy the dramatic coastline from the water in total comfort, completely avoiding the necessity of driving through the UAE.

Shinas has the capability to cruise at 51 knots or 100 km/h and can take 208 passengers and 56 cars. Tourist fares start from 39 Omani Rials for a single adult journey from Muscat to Musandam, which is approximately £50.00 GBP.

When the five-strong fleet is fully operational thenew routes will make it easier for tourists to visit some of the many beautiful and secluded areas of Oman and is also expected to be popular with Omani citizens and expatriate residents.

There will be two ferries in the North, linking Khasab (Musandam) and Muscat, two in the South, linking Halniyat island with Salalah and one in the East, linking Masirah Island with Shannah.
