The sky’s no limit for Tunisia
Tunisia’s air passenger numbers are set to rise with its entrance into the open skies agreement and a new airport at Enfidha. After years of negotiations, Tunisia has entered into the Open Skies agreement allowing American, European and Arabic airlines to operate freely within its airspace.Scheduled flights to Tunisia are already offered by British Airways and the country’s national carrier, Tunisair. However, this movement paves the way for new airlines and low-cost carriers to schedule flights from the UK to Tunisia.
In preparation for the increase in flights, a new airport at Enfidha, situated between Hammamet and Sousse, is set to open in late 2009. Enfidha will be the country’s ninth airport and whilst it is initially expected to transport seven million passengers, its long-term capacity could reach up to 30 million.
Tunisia has long been a popular destination for British holidaymakers and as such a number of charter airlines including Britannia, Air 2000, JMC, Airtours, Monarch, First Choice, Nouvelair, Palmair and My Travel fly into the destination from a wide range of regional UK airports. With open skies this number is set to soar.
