Atlantic expedition spreads word of climate change

In the next 100 years the Atlantic sea level is set to rise by up to 1 meter, affecting thousands of coastal inhabitants in the UK alone. In response to this, a group of British explorers are set to visit 31 countries to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change, having just completed a tour of UK schools.

Their mission is to travel around the Atlantic coastline visiting low-lying communities, raising awareness about the consequences of sea levels rising. The 1 meter contour line they will follow is predicted to be the new coastline in 100 years.

In the course of their expedition, they will cover more than 35,000km, visiting schools and creating an educational network between 10,000 students around the Atlantic.

The trio, known collectively as Atlantic Rising, are winners of the £10,000 ‘Go Beyond’ Bursary which was awarded by the Royal Geographic Society (with IBG) and Land Rover earlier this year and today they will receive a Land Rover Defender 110 for their expedition.

Since winning the bursary, the team have travelled to schools in the UK that are in the most vulnerable areas from Barrow-in-Furness to Brighton. In the course of their expedition they will take in Europe Africa, Latin America and North America. It is their intention to create links between the schools that they visit around the world as they believe education is one of the strongest weapons we have against climate change.

Tim Bromfield from Atlantic Rising said; “Education is the most powerful weapon we have to combat climate change. By encouraging students around the Atlantic to work together, we want to highlight our shared responsibility in dealing with this critical issue. By encouraging international friendships, we hope to make people care enough to act.”
