It’s Bridling versus Madrid for top destination status

12th August 2009 Print
Tourism representatives from Bridlington and Madrid engaged in a passionate debate earlier this month, with the aim of finding out which is the best holiday destination, Spanish capital city Madrid, or Yorkshire’s very own Bridlington!

Janet Reuben, Chief Executive of Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY), went head to head with Beatrix Balesteros, Manager of the Madrid Tourist Board to earn Bridlington the title of the best destination for a holiday.

The debate took place on the Jeremy Sallis Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and pitched the two popular destinations against each other in a battle of who offered the most to visitors. The two representatives were quizzed on what were the best things to see and do and why visitors should go to one over the other.

Janet said: “The debate was all good natured, but we were still very keen to win! Bridlington is a fantastic destination with so much to offer to visitors, and we pulled out all the stops to highlight the town’s greatest assets including the Bridlington Spa and the heritage coastline.

“Bridlington is very popular holiday destination for people within the UK, but we are aiming to attract foreign tourists to the region as well. The strength of the Euro, and the excellent transport links that exist into Hull and East Yorkshire are making us a real force in the European visitor market.”

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "I’m delighted Bridlington has come out top and it is interesting that we are welcoming more and more Spanish visitors to Yorkshire. Our award-winning marketing campaign in Spain is paying off and as always we're here to greet them with a warm Yorkshire welcome."
