Health and safety may not be the most exciting subject for some but it’s vitally important particularly when constructing new homes.

So when Gleeson Homes heard that students at St Mary’s RC High School in Upper Newbold were learning about health and safety regulations the company invited them to its Vale Croft venture in Bolsover to see how the rules are put into practice.

A group of 17 students, aged 14 and 15, took part in the trip to Vale Croft, Carr Vale.

Teacher Andrea Rigby said: “The staff and students at St Mary’s are extremely grateful to Gleeson for inviting us to Vale Croft as it was a fantastic opportunity to reinforce students’ learning about site health and safety.

“Students were able to gather vital evidence about how the regulations are put into practice and will use the information for a course work assignment.”

She added: “By sharing their knowledge and expertise with our students, the Gleeson staff have enriched their learning experience, for which we are thankful.

“The students now have a better understanding of the construction industry and have been given a real insight into the importance of environmental sustainability.”

Rob Smith, regional build manager for Gleeson, said: “Our new homes will still be a firm fixture in the community when these young people are collecting their pensions and beyond, so we were delighted to give them a tour of the site and explain the important role that health and safety plays in the construction industry.”

He explained: “The first thing we did was to take them through a site induction and ensure the students were wearing the correct protective equipment as without these building sites can be hazardous places.

“We also talked them through examples of how safe working is encouraged and showed them how we manage out waste on site to meet new environmental regulations.”

Gleeson’s Vale Croft venture features a stunning range of contemporary one-bedroom mews, two bedroom-apartments and two, three and four-bedroom homes, offering something for everyone from first time buyers and growing families to those wanting to move up the property or downsize to a smaller property

Nestled between enchanting Sherwood Forest and the rolling hills of the Peak District, close to the historic town of Bolsover, Vale Croft offers contemporary countryside living at its very best.
