Subaru has teamed up with a leading East Anglian children’s charity and a local motoring enthusiast to spread a little Christmas cheer this year.

Sarah Turner, of Hingham, Norfolk, is driving a Subaru Forester to Lapland in order to hand-deliver Christmas letters to Santa Claus from children cared for by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

EACH provides care and support for life-threatened children and their families in their own homes, as well as at the charity’s three hospices based in Ipswich in Suffolk, Quidenham in Norfolk, and Milton in Cambridgeshire.

Turner set off on her 2,000-mile trip to Lapland from EACH’s Quidenham hospice on Saturday November 14.  Speaking before heading for the tundra, she said: “The diesel Forester will be the perfect travelling companion for what is sure to be a very challenging trip.”

“With the ‘Boxer’ diesel giving brilliant fuel economy I can cross Europe without a guided tour of the fuel stations, and once I hit the winter weather the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive will take good care of me.  Crucially, there is also ample space for all the post for Santa.”

After driving across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, Turner will hit Scandinavia where the weather is likely to turn nasty, even in early November.  She’s expecting to see plenty of snow, so required a vehicle that could handle both adverse driving conditions and long distances.

Turner is no stranger to driving in extreme and unusual places, having crossed arctic Canada back in 2004 using the now infamous ‘ice roads’ in temperatures that dropped to around minus 50 degrees centigrade.

Danielle Clarke, EACH community fundraising co-ordinator for South Norfolk and Norwich, said: “It’s great that Sarah has been able to help us out here at EACH with a unique journey to Lapland to deliver letters to Father Christmas.  We rely heavily upon voluntary donations and Sarah’s journey should go some way to raising the profile of EACH in the local community and beyond.”
