New shoots brings flower power to Blackthorn Brook

Persimmon Homes North Midlands was dealing with ‘new shoots’ of a different kind at its Blackthorn Brook development in North Hamilton, when they hosted a bulb planting event to introduce flower power to the residents on site.
The event was primarily organised by Graham Cole, a founding member of the New Shoots Gardening Club which aims to educate the residents of North Hamilton on all things horticultural and environmental, and Persimmon were more than happy to let his green fingers run wild at Blackthorn Brook.
The bulbs will be a mixture of snowdrops, daffodils and winter pansies bringing a colourful flower show of their very own to the site’s residents.
Based in Leicester, Persimmon Homes North Midlands is sponsoring the New Shoots club who currently have four allotments at Hope Hamilton Primary School. Persimmon has donated £200 to the club plus a number of scaffolding boards that were needed. The boards have been recycled by Persimmon Homes and will be used to divide the land into four allotments. The local housebuilder has also enlisted the help of their own landscape gardeners, Carriers, in preparing the land at the school for planting.
Mariana Knight, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes North Midlands, comments: “New Shoots is a brilliant new initiative for the area and is a club that we are extremely happy to lend our support to. We are always extremely keen to emphasise anything horticultural and environment to both visitors and residents to our developments and we even have vegetable patches located in the gardens of many of our showhomes.
“What also makes New Shoots special is that it has the potential of involving all age groups - two of the gardens are designated for local children - one via Hamilton schools and the other specifically aimed at teenager children possibly through a Youth Club.
“Our involvement has been a persimmon team effort with our Construction Team also assisting – our Construction Director Nigel Ashwood sourced the scaffold boards – these had reached the end of their building use but were ideal to recycle.
“It was fantastic having Graham and his team down to the development in North Hamilton and we can’t wait to see what the bulbs look like when they bloom next year.”
Graham Cole, founding member of the New Shoots club, said: “We are extremely grateful for Persimmon’s support as it is vital for us that members of the local community get involved with us and support what we are doing. We have had an overwhelming response so far, and events like the bulb planting at Blackthorn Brook are ideal as it allows residents to come along and see what we do and how this could be recreated in the gardens at their own homes.”
