Get ready for Cash-mas Day

22nd December 2009 Print

Wednesday 23rd December looks set to be the busiest day on record for Christmas cash spenders, according to figures from Tesco Bank.

Tesco is gearing up its 3,000-strong network of cash machines for its busiest day of the year next Wednesday, as consumers withdraw the cash they need for last-minute presents and to see them through the festive period.

Figures from Tesco Bank show that over the last few weeks people have been taking out more cash than last year during the peak Christmas shopping period.

This trend is expected to peak on the 23rd December when it is anticipated that ATMs will be handling 20% more transactions than last year. As a result, ATMs at Tesco are expected to issue nearly £1 billion to shoppers over the Christmas period.

The hardest working ATM over Christmas can be found in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, which is expected to serve over 550 Christmas shoppers per day.

Tesco Bank's head of ATMs, Stewart Gow said: "It's already shaping up to be a cash Christmas for most Brits this year and we're working hard to ensure our network of cash machines is well stocked to cope with record levels of demand."
