Britain experienced the worst snow for years overnight causing traffic chaos across the country this morning.

TomTom’s HD Traffic, a live traffic service updated every three minutes, showed 2456 miles of traffic at 08.00 this morning on major roads, with the longest queue being 50 miles on the A1 (between South Charlton and Darlington North) with delays on both sides of the road.  1196 separate traffic incidents were recorded, 823 of which were on major roads.

Compared to figures collated by TomTom’s HD Traffic Centre during the last heavy snowfall across the UK in February 2009, this is 435 more traffic jams on major roads and 1370 more miles of traffic.

With more snow expected to fall throughout the day, TomTom advises that people do not venture in to their cars.  If travel is necessary please check tomtom.com/routeplanner for the most up-to-date traffic information.

TomTom High Definition (HD) Traffic is available on the TomTom GO LIVE range of satellite navigation devices.
