Combat the corrosive effects of road salt

Motorists are being urged to give their car some serious TLC following one of the coldest spells of winter weather in the UK in living memory. Leading car care brand Autoglym has highlighted that the huge quantity of salt deposited on road surfaces over recent weeks – averaging 60,000 tonnes per day across the UK – will have a damaging affect on vehicle paintwork and exterior trim.
“Road salt can speed the corrosion of unprotected paintwork, as well as damage exposed plastic and rubber surfaces,” says Paul Caller, Autoglym’s CEO. “A thorough wash, followed by the application of a quality polish or wax, is highly advisable given the unusually high volume of salt now lingering on UK roads.”
Autoglym’s Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner is an ideal way of gently removing salt and grime. For the perfect way to cleanse paintwork, Autoglym’s recently-launched High Definition Cleanser and Surface Detailing Clay Kit will provide the best possible conditions for applying a coat of wax or polish.
Autoglym’s Super Resin Polish, or the company’s range-topping High Definition Wax, can then be applied to give long-lasting protection from the elements, as well as superior depth of shine. Once protected, a vehicle should then require only occasional washing to remove day-to-day dirt.
Exterior glass is always harder to keep clean in winter months, with road-spray quickly building up on headlights and windows. Autoglym’s All Season Quick Clear Screenwash, correctly diluted for the temperature, will ensure a clear, smear-free windscreen. The company’s Fast Glass can also be used to help maintain good visibility, as part of a regular car-care regime.
Autoglym’s Winter Car Care DO’S and DON’TS
DO dislodge mud and salt that can collect under wheel arches
DO protect your car by using a premium-grade polish or wax, such as Autoglym Super Resin Polish or High Definition Wax
DO clean your car periodically during the winter months to prevent a build-up of dirt
DO carry a full strength de-icer to clear ice from windscreen, mirrors, wipers and locks
DO increase the concentration of your car’s screenwash to prevent the solution from freezing as temperatures drop
DON’T use washing up liquid or poor-quality car wash fluids to wash your car, as it can remove protective coatings
DON’T use boiling water to clear ice from your windscreen as it can crack the glass
DON’T drive until your front and rear screen and side windows are clear of ice – it is illegal to drive with poor visibility
