Mum knows best - No matter what your age
As children, our mum’s are considered to be at the very heart of the home and family, and according to recent research from McCarthy & Stone, the national retirement developer, this doesn’t end as we get older and fly the nest.
A national survey of 35-50 years olds showed that even as adults, our mums continue to provide a one stop shop for help and advice on everything from the best way to cook a Sunday roast to sewing on buttons, and even how to climb the career ladder.
The art of creating good old fashioned home cooked food ‘just like mum used to make’ is alive and well, with 48% of respondents in Scotland admitting that they still go to their mums for culinary tips and advice. Similarly, over a third of those asked regularly asked their mum for help with sewing, alterations and repairs, closely followed by 35% admitting that they help with childcare and babysitting. However, only 4% said they would go to their mum for fashion and style advice!
With mums continuing to fulfil such an important role in modern society, it’s no wonder that 56% of people in Scotland speak to their mum at least two or three times a week and 30% wished they lived closer.

More than half of those that we spoke to believe that living closer to their mum would help them spend more time together, and 49% said it would help ease worries about them living on their own in later years.
