Church Gresley school girl wins David Wilson poetry competition

An eight year old school girl from Church Gresley has beaten off stiff competition from fellow classmates to win a Mother’s Day poem competition for local housebuilder, David Wilson East Midlands.
Alice Cotton from St George’s Primary School on Church Street impressed the panel of judges with her clever use of words to create the complimentary yet funny poem about her mum, which is simply entitled “My Mother”.
A presentation was recently held to announce the winners and David Wilson sales advisor, Sheila Bradford, was on hand to present third, second and first place winners with their prizes.
Winner Alice received £30 Toys R Us vouchers, whilst second place Kelby MacDonald, five, and third place Lauren Podesta, 11, received £20 and £10 vouchers respectively.
The winners were also presented with a luxury box of chocolates from Hotel Chocolat for the special women in their lives that inspired their entries.
Sue Brindley, Headteacher at St George’s Primary comments “The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the competition and being given the opportunity to show off their creative writing skills in making up a poem about their mums to help celebrate Mother’s Day.
“Alice was thrilled when she found out she had won, as were Kelby and Lauren the second and third place winners, and I would like to thank David Wilson for inviting us to take part in the competition.”
Philip Lacey, Sales Director for David Wilson says “We were very impressed with the standard of entries we received from the pupils of St George’s Primary and it was a tough decision choosing a winner. But Alice’s clever use of words made us laugh and her range of vocabulary as well as the rhyming couplets within the poem, made her the obvious choice as the winner.
“Well done Alice on winning the competition, I’m sure you’re mum will be very proud, and thank you to all the other children at St George’s Primary for their entries.”
Alice’s poem read:
Brilliant and beautiful that’s my mother
Kind and silly there is no other
Helpful and caring she’s such fun
And she’s as bright as the sun
Posh and lucky as well as cool
Even though she acts like a fool
She can’t sing but she likes to hum
That’s my super duper mum!
The winning entries will now go on display inside David Wilson’s Castle Heights sales office which is open daily from 11am to 6pm.
