As the UK's children gear up to gorge themselves on an average five Easter eggs each, research from money.co.uk has revealed that the nation's mums would prefer friends and family to give cash instead of confectionary.

Young mum Rebecca Clarke said: "Between them, my family probably spend £30 on Easter eggs each year.

"This year my children will get a home made gift and around £10 each, which I will use to get them started with saving accounts. It may not be a huge amount, but it is certainly a start."
