Blessed are the cheese-makers

8th April 2010 Print

Cheese-lovers have the perfect excuse to indulge while visiting the medieval ‘cliff-hanging’ village of Rocamadour (just north of Toulouse) as each year it hosts the largest cheese festival in the South of France.

Held on Whit Sunday (23rd May 2010) and featuring samples from 40 producers, the festival takes gourmands back to a time of basic cheese-making traditions, as may be expected from the village that gives its name to the popular goat’s cheese.

Historically a major pilgrimage site along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, holidaymakers get the chance to visit Rocamadour and indulge their cheese cravings while on Headwater’s Hidden Valleys Cycling holiday safe in the knowledge that they’ll burn the calories straight off.

Starting by the River Lot and travelling on a triangular route, the relaxing cycling holiday takes in the area’s dramatic unspoiled scenery and beautiful hill villages far from the typical tourist trail.

The seven day Hidden Valleys Cycling independent hotel-to-hotel holiday starts from £727 per person tour only travelling in May, including six nights 2* and 3* accommodation with breakfasts and evening meals, bike hire, transfer of bags between hotels, local information, route notes and map kit.

With flights from London Heathrow to Toulouse with British Airways and connecting rail transfers, prices start from £924 per person in May. Flights are also available from most regional UK airports.
