Parental communication is key to exam success

12th April 2010 Print

With exams looming, the pressure is mounting for pupils and parents across the UK. However, new research shows nine in ten parents don’t know how long their children should spend revising and worryingly, less than a third (30%) of pupils are planning their revision in advance.

This leaves the majority starting revision just one week before exams, opting for last minute cramming or even not revising at all.

The research also revealed a third of parents think students should be revising until they are confident they know a subject, while a similar number (28%) believe just an hour a day in the run up to exams is sufficient. Guidelines actually recommend that revision is done in 30 to 45 minute blocks with a ten minute break in between.

Furthermore, nearly half of parents (48%) think their children can have their music or TV on whilst studying, when in fact many experts believe this can be a big distraction.

While it’s important for children to take breaks, get enough sleep and maintain a healthy balanced diet, sadly, a tenth of Brits don’t actually know how  their children revise, which could lead to serious trouble come exam time.

The research for Omega-3 supplement specialists – Equazen eye q - highlights the need for more communication between parents and their children as planning is key to a successful revision plan.
