Coventry fans find perfect match at The City

Lifelong fan David Goodwin couldn’t help feeling despondent when his beloved Coventry City FC announced it was moving home from Highfield Road – its historic ground for more than a century.
Although he recognised that the club’s move to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena was a step forward, the setting for so many years of joy and heartache seemed to be disappearing for good.
So when the opportunity arose to own new-build homes in Coventry on the very site where Highfield Road used to stand, it was a chance he was never going to turn down.
David and his partner Anne-Marie Paszkiewicz (28), both loyal Coventry season ticket-holders, were among the first people to move into George Wimpey’s The City development – now nearing completion with just a few two-bedroom apartments remaining for sale – and are proud that a part of their club’s heritage is now theirs to keep.
“I guess it was sad when we had to leave Highfield Road, but it is a modern world we live in, and there has to be some progress – and the facilities and quality of the new stadium far outweighs what was there before,” says David.
“Of course, the area where the ground used to be has changed beyond recognition, but I believe it’s been a change for the better. The new apartments for sale have really helped to smarten up the neighbourhood and there’s a whole new mix of people choosing these new properties in Coventry.
“There were a number of reasons why we chose to move to The City – our new three-bedroom home was great value for money, it’s in a great location for travel and the city centre and yet it’s also really quiet and peaceful – but a big part of our decision was down to the significance of the site for us as Coventry City supporters.
“The prospect of actually living on what used to be Sky Blue turf was a real added bonus – and I’ll admit it was so exciting that it used to keep me awake at night for the first few weeks!”
The City is a collection of 300 new homes in Coventry, built by George Wimpey on the former Highfield Road stadium and surrounding land. Although the development is now sold out, would-be buyers looking for new-build properties for sale in Coventry can still choose from a selection of stylish homes at Taylor Wimpey’s Bannerbrook Grange.
