Truck and van operators keen to reduce their costs and their carbon footprints can learn more about keeping out of the red and staying green, at a special, environmentally-themed open day.

The ECO-Day event is being staged on Thursday April 22nd by Northside Truck & Van, the official Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer for South and West Yorkshire, at its dealership in Doncaster.

It will showcase the latest developments in vehicle and ancillary technology, as well as specialised driver training, and provide a wealth of information to help operators clean up their acts.

Anyone who runs trucks and vans as part of their business is welcome to attend. The day starts at 10am, at Northside’s state-of-the-art facility on Balby Carr Bank, Balby Carr.  There will be presentations on vehicle technology, training and telematics, as well as a chance to learn more about the many ways in which Mercedes-Benz is helping commercial vehicle users to improve their fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions.

Northside Truck & Van Managing Director Tim Ward said: “Mercedes-Benz has been at the forefront of the drive to reduce vehicle emissions for many years, and of course in the current difficult economic climate we’re constantly striving to help our customers to reduce their operating costs.

“There are many ways in which we can help. For example, new trucks and vans can be fitted with innovative technology which reduces wasteful idling by cutting the engine whenever a vehicle is stationary, then automatically starting it again when the driver is ready to move off – this can make a huge difference to people whose work involves lots of stop-start driving or fighting through city-centre traffic.

“Mercedes-Benz Natural Gas Technology is another innovation that can bring significant reductions in carbon emissions to operators in certain applications. Leeds City Council is already achieving great results with a gas-powered Mercedes-Benz Econic refuse collection truck, while Sheffield City Council is currently trialling a fleet of gas-engined Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans.

“Even if you don’t want to invest in a new vehicle right now, we can still help. Rather than teaching basic skills, Mercedes-Benz Driver Training is about helping professional drivers to become even more efficient by giving them a host of useful tips on how to get the very best performance out of their vehicle.”

Among the vehicles on display at the event will be a gas-powered Sprinter van and Econic refuse collection truck, a diesel-electric hybrid Mitsubishi Fuso Canter, and trucks and vans with fuel-saving Motor Stop/Start and ECO-Start technology.
