Millions running risks with car maintenance

Ford has found that millions of British motorists are running risks with their car maintenance by attempting to reduce their overall motoring costs in the face of rising road tax and fuel costs.

Eighteen per cent of UK drivers interviewed have no breakdown cover at all, while 15 per cent have skipped or postponed routine servicing of their car to save money.

This situation seems worst among younger drivers: 35 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds and 28 per cent of 25 to 34 year olds forego any roadside assistance, with drivers in London most likely (22 per cent) to have faith in their vehicle.

This is despite the fact that separate research for consumer group Which? found that one in six motorists experience a breakdown at least once a year.

Mike Weatherston, group service marketing manager at Hendy Ford, said: “It’s a story we hear often but while trying to avoid the cost, many of these drivers could regret skipping basic maintenance and roadside cover.”

In response, Ford is now offering “Ford Assistance 12” - its comprehensive, year-long, Europe-wide roadside assistance package, as a low-cost option or free-of-charge addition to scheduled services.

This provides cover for 12 months (or until the car is due for its next service, whichever is sooner) and includes home assistance and roadside cover throughout Europe.  Cars that cannot be fixed at the roadside can be transported home or to a Ford dealer, even from abroad.  An equivalent package can easily cost £80.

Ford is also helping customers spread the cost of servicing their car by introducing the “Ford Protect Service Assure” scheme, which allows scheduled servicing to be paid in manageable monthly instalments.

Paul Muers, marketing manager, Ford Customer Service Division, said:  “The importance of good maintenance doesn’t change, but we recognise the equal importance of maximising the affordability and convenience for customers.”

All Ford dealer services include a free, supplementary visual health check, covering more than 25 vital maintenance and safety assessments. Customers can find more details, terms and conditions and their nearest Ford dealer or Rapid Fit centre at ford.co.uk/service.
