Advice for a healthy, happy, holiday

Carbon Monoxide alarm

Look in the average suitcase and you’d probably expect to find a passport, sun cream and a swimming costume, but this summer holidaymakers are being encouraged to add another item to their list of essentials – a carbon monoxide alarm.

npower hometeam, which installs, services and repairs boilers, is appealing to holidaymakers to take a portable carbon monoxide alarm with them when they go away to help significantly reduce their risk of CO poisoning.

Carbon monoxide emissions are often caused by failure or damage to gas appliances, which prevents fuel from burning properly. The risk applies when staying in accommodation, either here in the UK or abroad. Tourists are often aware of their safety when they are travelling around on holiday, however the risk of CO emissions in holiday accommodation can be overlooked.

Richard Cotton, from npower hometeam, comments: “Over the last few years, people have become much more aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide emissions  and have taken measures in their own homes to reduce the risk, such as having their boiler serviced annually and fitting a carbon monoxide alarm. But many people still overlook the potential risk when they are on holiday.

“Because carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, leaks can be difficult to spot, but a carbon monoxide alarm will detect the early signs of a leak and could alert you to any problems. By investing in a good quality portable alarm, you can rest assured that you are protected against the risk of CO emissions and get on with enjoying your holiday.”

Carbon monoxide alarms from npower hometeam are fully portable and can be used in any holiday accommodation including caravans and boats. The alarms come pre fitted with batteries so no installation or mains power is required. The kite marked alarms are fully approved by all European standards, come with a six year guarantee and an automatic sensor adjustment with a continuous self-test function to ensure complete accuracy.  The CO alarm should be positioned in the same room as the gas appliance or boiler and replaced after six years.

Holidaymakers can also reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by making sure their accommodation is well ventilated and by looking out for signs of a leak, which can include discoloration around the edges of the gas appliance; if there’s a boiler, look out for a yellow rather than a blue flame and increased condensation.

The cost of an npower hometeam CO alarm is just £21.97. For more information or to purchase an alarm, call 0845 070 4860, between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
