Tipton team go back to school

An amateur team of ‘teachers’ from the Tipton and Coseley Building Society have gone back to the classroom to share mathematical and numeracy skills with local pupils.
The Tipton’s Julie Jones, Richard Newton, Dalbeer Dhinsa and Katie Smith visited Tipton Green Primary School every week during the spring term, spending an hour with a group of 11 year old children.
The project, which was established by the Tipton in order to help local schoolchildren to gain a clearer understanding of mathematics through fun numeracy games, proved to be an overwhelming success, with 75 percent of the children who took part improving their grades.
Commenting on the success of the project, Richard Newton, general manager finance and systems at The Tipton said: “Our team were extremely keen to get involved in this project as we really wanted to take a fun approach towards learning numeracy skills to our local primary school. We hoped that the children would develop a firmer understanding and interest in this subject during our time at the school and given the improvement in grades, it would seem that our efforts were worthwhile.”
Ryan Messenger, Year 6 teacher at Tipton Green Primary School added: “Our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the numeracy skills classes that have been led by the team from the Tipton. Not only have the sessions added an extra dimension to their learning around this important subject but more importantly, they have significantly helped improve their mathematical skills.”
