Make the Isle of Man your summer ‘staycation’

23rd August 2010 Print

The number of tourists visiting the Isle of Man for the first time is at a five year high.  With its breathtaking scenery, untouched beaches and relaxed pace of life, summer is the perfect time to follow in their footsteps and discover this jewel of an Island.

The past 12 months have seen a 13% drop in foreign holidays, so if you are one of the millions of Brits opting for a recession busting ‘staycation’, why not consider exploring this unspoilt area of Britain.

The Isle of Man is home to some of the best attractions that Britain has to offer. These, coupled with the spectacular landscapes and stunning coastlines will guarantee a holiday perfect for children and adults alike.

Kids can get back to nature sailing around the 160km of coastline spotting seals and if they are lucky sharks, basking sharks and dolphins too. Take a trip up to the highest point on the Island - Snaefell Mountain on the Snaefell Electric Railway or seek an adventure on dry land quad biking around the beautiful Manx countryside. Why not also consider joining one of the famous ghost walks around the spooky Castle Rushen in Castletown or the remains of the stunning Peel Castle?

The Island is steeped in history for those seeking a culture break, and unlike elsewhere in Britain, here you will find working Victorian railways, ancient fortresses and the world’s largest working water wheel.

For a more relaxing experience, take a leisurely drive to Cregneash Village where the National Folk Museum re-enacts the farming history of the Island.  Wander round the village, listening to actors recalling stories of traditional Manx life, and take part in some of the craft workshops on offer.  Before leaving the museum, be sure to take a few pictures of the spectacular scenery which overlooks the Calf of Man –some of the best views on the Island.

At around only an hour’s flight from most UK airports and slightly longer by ferry, the Isle of Man is much closer than you may think. Seven night packages for two adults and two children from Liverpool via ferry start at just £659 or flying from London Gatwick at just £899.
