Leading housebuilder Taylor Wimpey and development partner L&Q provide funding for SportInspired event near Academy Central development of new homes in Barking.

The developers creating the new Academy Central community of apartments and houses for sale in Barking have been awarded the main sponsorship of an exciting community sports event involving 500 youngsters from local schools.

Taylor Wimpey and L&Q’s donation is being used by social enterprise group SportInspired to hold the fun-filled Community Games at Mayesbrook Park – just a stone’s throw from this sought-after development of Barking flats and houses – on Thursday 16th September.

Michael O’Leary, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “We’re thrilled to be sponsoring such a vibrant and inclusive event, which really reflects our aspirations to make Academy Central a modern and exciting community of houses and flats in Barking for people of all ages.

“Working with L&Q, SportInspired and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council, as well as all the clubs, sportspeople and ‘young leaders’ helping to run the event, we are proud to play a big part in a day which local youngsters will remember for years to come.”

Designed to increase participation in sport among both youngsters and adults, the Community Games is an innovative multi-sport festival featuring a host of locally provided activities. Mixed teams of young people participate in the different sports through a competition which is run using community-based clubs and volunteers.

Groups involved in the event include London Beach Volleyball Club, Barking and Dagenham Canoe Club, Barking Ladies and Euro Dagenham football clubs, Dagenham Rugby Club, Barking and Dagenham BMX Club, Plashet Hockey Club, Kaizen Ryu Karate Do, London Black Belt Academy, New Cambell Netball Club and Dagenham Rugby Club.

Over the course of the day, some 32 teams of local youngsters, most of whom attend the Sydney Russell and Barking Abbey schools, will participate in 128 matches and games.

It is hoped the event will inspire participants to get involved in the many sporting clubs which operate throughout the area.

Taylor Wimpey and L&Q are breathing new life into Barking through their transformation of the former University of East London campus into Academy Central, a community of family homes and stylish one, two and three-bedroom apartments.

Homes at the development are designed to be up to 25% more energy efficient than properties built just three years ago. Plus, the majority of homes feature ‘green roofs’ which help improve air quality, provide natural insulation and promote bio-diversity.

More information about the community being created is available by visiting the Academy Central Sales Centre and new show apartment in Longbridge Road, Barking, open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5.30pm.
