The North East housing market received a timely boost today when the region’s leading housebuilder said it would be opening five new sites in the next twelve months alone.

Barratt will start work on the five developments, comprising around 1,250 new homes, in the next year. The developments have a total sales value of £210 million and provide further evidence that the property market in the region is likely to outperform some other parts of the country.

“There is strong demand for houses here and this will help sustain the local housing market whatever happens to the national economy,” said Fenton Hewitt, Sales Director at Barratt North East.

“We would not be making this significant commitment to the market in this area unless we were confident about its prospects in the medium-term.

“By building these developments we will be bringing new jobs and also be creating well-designed, competitively-priced new homes which local people need.”

The new developments will be located at:

• Berry Edge, Consett: £51m scheme for 319 homes
• Former Lambton cokeworks near Sunderland: £70m scheme for 350 homes
• Mandale Park, Thornaby: £13m scheme for 83 homes
• Blakeston Lane, Norton: £12m scheme for 74 homes
• Former Thorn Lighting site, Spennymoor: £67m scheme for 416 homes
