Design award for Ireland's coolest boutique hotel

The Ice House in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland, has been winning awards since its opening three years ago and added another to its collection at the Irish Restaurant awards last month.

Praised for its stunning design, which has brought a contemporary edge to this historic building that once stored the ice for what was then Ireland’s principal sea port, The Pier restaurant at the Ice House boasts stunning views across the River Moy to the woods opposite, from a breathtaking glass atrium.

A team of leading architects from Smith and Kennedy Architects (SKA), a well-known practise based in Dublin, were behind the stunning concept which now attracts national and international visitors.

A number of artists were also involved in the design – Charles Tyrrell, a renowned painter from Ireland whose work has featured at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Martin Gale, a realist painter whose work is represented at the Arts Council of Ireland and Bank of Ireland and John Devlin, a Dublin-born artist who worked as a well-known illustrator in the USA and now creates super-realistic paintings.

General manager Claire O’Sullivan said, “We’re thrilled to receive this recognition which is a testament to the skill and creativity that went into the design but is also a credit to the team here which ensures the vision is fully brought to life by delivering excellent food and wine and attentive and friendly service for all our guests.

“The Pier restaurant is already well-known locally, regionally and nationally here but we’re now attracting more UK visitors than ever before, thanks to easy access via Knock airport from a host of regional UK departure airports plus great flight deals and I’m confident that guests will find the restaurant lives up to their expectations and is an integral and enjoyable part of their experience at the Ice House.”

Prices start from £60 per person sharing, including breakfast, based on the Midweek Madness two-night package, with one dinner and champagne reception also included.
