Journey through the afterlife at new London exhibition

20th October 2010 Print

On 4 November, a new exhibition will open at The British Museum that will explain how the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead was thought to guide the deceased safely through the dangers of the underworld, ultimately ensuring eternal life.

This is the longest Book of the Dead in the World and never before has it been the focus of such a major exhibition. Using state-of-the-art visualisation technology and recent research, the exhibition will provide new and interactive ways of understanding the Book and allow visitors to find out more about life and death in ancient Egypt. Short break specialist Superbreak (superbreak.com) has a range of packages combining overnight accommodation with timed entry tickets to the Book of the Dead.

The 'Book' is not a single text, but a compilation of spells, often with illustrations of the underworld. The exhibition will feature illustrated manuscripts of the Book of the Dead on papyrus and linen, many from the British Museum's unparalleled collection. These spells and texts were used by Egyptians from around 1600 BC to the 1st century AD, and the exhibition reveals how the texts evolved and changed over the centuries. Through these remarkable objects, the exhibition will explore the journey from death to the afterlife. Other objects will include funerary figurines (shabtis), amulets, jewellery, statues and coffins, all used to aid the deceased in attaining the perfect afterlife. ??

THREE STAR PACKAGE - £59.50 per person staying one night at the three star Royal National with breakfast and a timed entry ticket to the exhibition. Valid from 4 November onwards. Based on two sharing from Sunday to Friday.

FOUR STAR PACKAGE - £99.80 per person staying one night at the four star Hotel Russell with breakfast and a timed entry ticket to the exhibition. Valid at weekends in November and based on two sharing.
