Modern mums believe the Recommended Daily Allowance, or RDA of a child’s day should be made up of 75% creative play, a survey from Playmobil has revealed.

Mums favour creative, interactive, traditional play, over academic challenges and the latest faddy toys or computer games. Traditional toys are still top for the tots for British mums, where the Playmobil Fire Engine has just been listed in the top 12 toys in the pre-school category at the biggest UK toy event of the year, Dream Toys.

The research from toy giant, Playmobil, surveyed 1000 British mums on how they like their child to play and what they like them to play with. According to the research a massive 89% of mums favour more creative and traditional toys, over the latest craze, while 56% buy play sets and train sets over computer or academic games. An astonishing 89% believe it develops their imagination and stimulates the mind, and a further 67% say that it develops their social skills.

Jamie Dickinson, Marketing Manager for Playmobil, comments, “Developing a child’s imagination and letting them be children, is a vital part of their childhood. The results of this research show how, even in this tech generation, British mums still favour traditional toys that allow them to interact with their children and include the whole family.”

Susanna Scott, founder of the British Mummy Bloggers and co-founder of Cybermummy Conferences, supports the findings of Playmobil’s research, "The best toys are the traditional ones. When doing a clear-up -- I always keep the classics. I think it’s important for children to develop their skills and they will accomplish this through interactive and creative play, rather than sitting in front of a screen such as a television or computer”.
