Tech savvy students carry over £1,300 worth of goods

Endsleigh's student possessions survey revealed that today's tech savvy students carry over £1,300 worth of goods on them.

And this figure is set to rise after Christmas, following expectations from retailers of sales over the festive period to be the same or better than last year. ‘Must have' items are becoming increasingly affordable, as stores offer big promotions and discounts - 41% of retailers are providing more offers to consumers than last year, according to the British Retail Consortium.

The survey showed that students' most popular possessions are electrical goods, including laptops (94%), mobile phone (93%), ipods and MP3 players (73%), and digital cameras (62%).

The UK's number one student insurance provider,  Endsleigh, is advising students who are asking for high tech gifts for Christmas to take care of their newly acquired gadgets when travelling back to University in the New Year, and when they are in and around campus.

Vicki O' Connell, Endsleigh Spokesperson said, "High tech presents such as ipods, e-readers and smart phones will be the top of students' most wanted list for Christmas. Given that retailers have slashed their prices for gadgets, it's likely the majority of students returning to University in the New Year will be taking a number of these with them, and using them on a day-to-day basis on campus.

It is important for tech savvy students to remember that lighter and smaller, portable gadgets are more prone to loss or theft. And as our survey shows, the cost of just a few ‘life essentials' such as a smart phone and laptop can accumulate quickly

I would urge students to re-assess the value of their possessions after Christmas and ensure they have an adequate insurance policy, which covers the cost of all of their valuables. It's also important not to rely on being covered by parent's insurance especially with gadgets"
