Scotland’s first Mercedes-Benz Econic refuse collection vehicle to be fitted with an electrically powered GeesinkNorba body, is now delivering the combined benefits of reduced fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions.

Scottish Borders Council’s new truck is driven by a clean, ‘green’ Euro 5 turbo-diesel straight six. For the first time in a vehicle operating north of the border, the engine is used to power the chassis only – the GeesinkNorba Plug-in Electric bin lifting and waste compacting systems run off rechargeable batteries.

Supplied by Bellshill dealer Western Commercial, the 6x2 Econic 2629LL rear-steer chassis was sent to GeesinkNorba, in Llantrisant, south Wales, where the body was added – its batteries are mounted vertically in the space between the cab wall and body, so there is no risk of overloading the rear axles. This equipment is now helping the Econic to deliver fuel returns that are around 25 per cent better than those of a comparable standard vehicle.

Council Fleet Manager John Martin explained: “We had been looking at ways of reducing the fuel consumption of our refuse trucks and GeesinkNorba’s Plug-in Electric system seemed to offer an excellent solution.

“The batteries are charged overnight and last all day. Powering the body electrically obviously reduces our fuel use, and thereby helps us to cut our carbon footprint too. It’s also much quieter, which is an added benefit when working outside people’s homes in the very early morning.”

He continued: “The vehicle was more expensive to buy than a standard truck but we have calculated that the savings we will make over its working life will more than cover the extra cost. That calculation was based on fuel costs at the time we ordered the truck – they’ve risen significantly since then and look set to continue climbing, which makes this vehicle an even more attractive proposition.”

Added Mr Martin. “The Mercedes-Benz Econic now accounts for more than half of our fleet of 6x2 refuse trucks. It’s a proven performer – our operatives like the comfortable, user-friendly cabs and our in-house workshop team know the product well, while we also enjoy an excellent working relationship with Western Commercial.”
