America’s musical south by rail

24th March 2011 Print

Great Rail Journeys’ exclusive American tour of the Southern States is a must for music fans this summer.

‘Tracks of the Deep South’ is a music-themed itinerary combining Nashville’s country sounds with New Orleans Jazz and a healthy dose of Memphis blues in a 14-day fully-escorted holiday.

Speeding between Memphis, New Orleans and Atlanta on Amtrak services, the holiday also visits Chattanooga and Nashville.  Memorable excursions on heritage rail lines include the restored Tennessee Valley Railway along the Missionary Ridge route and the world’s steepest passenger railway – Lookout Mountain Incline Railway – which dates back to 1895.

There are guided tours of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville; Elvis Presley’s birthplace in Tupelo, as well as his Graceland mansion; Sun Studios, the birthplace of Rock and Roll and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

In New Orleans, a dinner jazz cruise on one of the last Mississippi steamboats is the highlight of a three-night stay in ‘the Big Easy’ which includes free time to soak up the sounds and sights of Bourbon Street.

With departures 8 and 22 May, 12 June, 11 September and 2 and 16 October this year, the tour costs from £2,148 per person, twin share including return flights from London, 12 nights’ room only accommodation, excursions as described, all travel and transfers within the USA plus the services of a tour manager throughout.
