Volvo car winner Jon Carter, from Kings Way, Royston, took delivery of his brand new Volvo S60 D3 R-Design from Volvo Cars Bishop’s Stortford 10 years after a serious road accident meant he was unable to walk unaided for a year and left him with a fear of driving.

The new Volvo S60 R-Design will also be useful as Jon develops his business as an eco-product distributor which he started seven months ago.  Jon was forced to give up his occupation as a carpenter when he suffered extensive injuries including broken ribs and a broken pelvis which left him bed-bound for six months when as a back seat passenger, the car in which he was travelling skidded on black ice and fog before hitting a roundabout. It took Jon another six months to progress from wheelchair to crutches and finally to walking although he faces a lifetime of hip replacement surgery and is unable to stand or sit for long periods of time.

Collecting his new car from the business at Stortford Hall Industrial Estate, Dunmow Road, Jon, who lives with his partner April Bozier and their seven-month-old daughter Lily, says:  “Winning this car means so much to us it’s quite overwhelming. It has provided me and my family with one of the safest vehicles on the road and after my accident, safety is something I am much more conscious of and we would never have had the means to fund such an amazing car. “

Jon received a full handover from Volvo Cars Bishop’s Stortford’s sales manager Doug Parker. The business is one of the newest in the Volvo network and the state-of-the-art facility opened in September last year following an investment of more than £500,000 from parent company Regent Automotive. The one-acre site includes the entire range of Volvo models, plus a huge choice of genuine approved used Volvo models and full aftersales services.

Engineered to be the safest car in its class and the safest Volvo ever, the S60 incorporates Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, a development of Volvo's Collision Warning system, designed for higher speeds and warns drivers if they're about to hit another vehicle, applying the brakes automatically if necessary.  The vehicle also includes City Safety developed to avoid low speed accidents and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

Jon was the winner of the national competition whereby browsers who had signed up to receive news from Volvo UK were invited to enter the prize draw to win a car.
