Freiburg

Blessed by the sun and surrounded by rolling, green Black Forest hills, Freiburg, the capital of the Black Forest, offers its visitors southern flair and a warm, positive feel.

Its historic town centre still forms the hub of activity in today’s Freiburg. One feature that never ceases to amaze is the ‘Bächle’; the stone-clad water channel system that weaves through Freiburg’s streets and alleyways. Being able to relieve one’s weary feet during a city centre stroll by dipping them into the Bächle is a unique service only Freiburg can proudly offer.

Until 30 October 2011: Our Black Forest. Romance and Reality
A large, special exhibition devoted to the history and stories of the Black Forest is shown at the Augustiner Museum, displaying the museum’s large collection of folkloristic artefacts in a new, fresh, sometimes even tongue-in-cheek angle. Is the Black Forest full of colour, wildly romantic or both? The exhibition picks up on these clichés and exposes them, offering new perspectives on a cultivated landscape that is recognised as a homeland, travel destination and native soil of successful merchants, inventors, artists and poets, not just in Germany but worldwide.
