An eco-chic romantic retreat in Granada

7th June 2011 Print

Jicaro Island Ecolodge offers an eco-friendly romantic retreat on a private island by the shore of Lake Nicaragua, within easy reach of the colonial town of Granada.

Nestling among lush vegetation, Jicaro is a chic hideaway in Central America, ideal for discreet wedding ceremonies and honeymooners seeking somewhere to relax, retune and reinvigorate far from the madding crowd.

Conjure the ultimate in romance: a secret island hideaway surrounded by lush rainforest with rose petals marking the aisle and tropical flowers for the bouquet. A more peaceful and private place for an intimate wedding – complete with champagne and cake, professional photographer and traditional local music – is hard to imagine; and when coupled with the breathtaking views, array of activities and warm welcome, Jicaro is the perfect place to pledge undying love.

The nine naturally-ventilated casitas – split level self-contained houses, all with lake views – are not overlooked, providing the ultimate in privacy. Each one-bedroom casita is appointed to the highest standard with a king size bed, furniture made locally from Rainforest Alliance certified wood and an oversized hammock on its secluded deck.

Couples tying the knot can choose from several breathtaking spots to exchange vows at the lodge including around the cenote or on the floating deck. Jicaro offers a portfolio of wedding packages to suit couples’ personality and pocket, all including an English language ceremony:

• Lawyer/Officiate to oversee all legalities and perform ceremony.
• Professional Photography service.
• Bride’s bouquet and groom’s boutonniere – choice available.
• Professional pre-coordination (up to ten guests).

• An on-site planner can be provided for an additional US$500.

While relaxation is at the heart of Jicaro, the relatively undiscovered rainforests, islands and towns of Nicaragua provide discoveries and adventures that honeymooners will remember forever. Spend time together hiking through the cloud forest of nearby Mombacho Volcano; or discover the vibrant history of Granada with a local guide; then spot iguanas, howler monkeys and rare birds in the tropical dry forest; or spend a day on Zapatera Island, a National Park, discovering its bustling fishing village, archaeology and wildlife including rare turtles.

Back at Jicaro, guests can kayak through water lilies at sunrise, swim in the fresh water infinity pool or in the lake; laze in a private hammock; indulge in massages using indigenous products – and discuss the day’s adventures over a candlelit dinner on the lodge’s floating deck as the sun sets.

Jicaro is in tune with its environment, so guests stay with a clear environmental conscience: solar panels generate power, fresh food and drinks come from sustainable local sources, the infinity pool is filled with fresh water, and all wooden furniture is Rainforest Alliance accredited.
