Lucky ‘John’ gets all the Birthday Cards
A survey of 100,000 personalised greeting cards has shown that more Birthday Cards get sent to “John” than any other name. We’re a nation of card givers and the league table show more cards going to boys than girls (although women buy most of them!) and 25% more to Dads than Mums. On average we send 31 greeting cards per person per year in the UK (Greeting Card Association, 2010) creating an industry worth £1.47 billion.
The top recipients of cards in 2011 were also the top Boy’s names in 1944, 1954 and 1964 according to the Office for National Statistics. Whilst Oliver, Jake and Harry are the most popular baby’s names today according to the latest national survey, it seems the digital Pound is more likely to be spent on John, Paul and Steve who are statistically likely to be in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.
There may be Birthday squabbles at the Royal palaces with Kate coming 59th and Harry 104th but William not showing in the top 200 to receive Birthday Cards.
As for nicknames, we’re a nation of sweethearts, with ‘Darling’ the most popular moniker followed by ‘Lovely’ and ‘Sexy’. Although the research was compiled for UK card senders only, 5% of those sending a card to their Mother used the American term “Mom”. She will be pleased though as 19% of people indicated that their card was going to “The Best Mum in the World”. Not to be outdone, 24% of Dads getting a card were declared “The Best Dad in the World”.
Most unusual name? Of all 100,000 cards researched, only one was addressed to Zippy.
