Young people from across the UK are being offered the opportunity to develop their career aspirations with one of the UK’s most successful housebuilders, Persimmon Homes.

As part of the company’s FIRST trainee scheme, during the 2010 and 2011 intake, 30 youngsters have been successfully awarded a place on the four-year programme which is an alternative to a traditional apprenticeship.

With Persimmon’s FIRST scheme, trainees have the opportunity to earn and learn as specific training is provided alongside a formal assessment process and attendance at college, with all fees covered throughout the training period. In addition, trainees are provided with a mentor who is able to offer an unrivalled insight into the skills required to succeed in the industry.

Richard Latham, HR director for the Persimmon Group, is proud to have helped play a part in developing the skills and talent of so many youngsters across the country. He said: “We are keen advocates of on-the-job training and our FIRST programme is tailored to provide an all round experience in a range of construction environments.

“It is hoped that in time, FIRST trainees’ introduction to the industry and Persimmon in particular will not only see them fully immersed in our business processes by the end of four years, but will also fully equip them to eventually join nearly a third of our staff who have been with the business for over ten years.

“As the future talent of the construction industry, we are firmly committed in investing in opportunities for young people to get a foothold on the career ladder.”

There are a number of career routes available to Persimmon’s FIRST trainees from technical or site-based programmes to recently introduced, sales and marketing positions. Whichever the discipline, each trainee will work towards achieving NVQ or BTEC qualifications.

The deadline closes at the end of January for the 2012 intake. Young people who are interested in a career in the construction industry are urged to contact their regional Persimmon Homes office for details regarding the application process.
