Leading housebuilder Barratt North East is launching three new developments in the region, providing hundreds of jobs for local people.

The company plans to start developments in Newcastle and Spennymoor in coming months and recently began work on a third site in Washington. Together the three schemes will provide around 550 new homes and 1,100 jobs.

The housebuilder says that it predominantly employs local sub-contractors and tradesmen – so local businesses and people will benefit directly from the new jobs.

Fenton Hewitt, Sales Director at Barratt North East, said: “The Prime Minister has said again and again that one of the best ways to boost economic growth and get people working is through building more homes.

“The plans we are announcing today show exactly how that theory works in practice. These new sites will provide desperately-needed new homes for local people at a time when there is a chronic shortage of housing.

“In addition to the local construction jobs created, the local people who move into the new homes will also spend their wages locally. This translates into a significant boost for local retailers at a time when concerns remain about the national financial picture. It’s exactly what this area needs.”

The new sites are at Scotswood in the west end of Newcastle, where Barratt is to start work shortly on 80 homes, and on the former Thorn Lighting site in Spennymoor which will provide 366 new homes. The third scheme, at Teal Farm Village, Washington, is being developed by sister company David Wilson Homes North East for 95 luxury homes.

The Scotswood scheme forms part of a major regeneration project which will eventually provide 1,800 eco-friendly family homes with new neighbourhood and commercial facilities, parks and public open spaces.

The project is the biggest city redevelopment in the north of England and is being undertaken by a new public private partnership between Newcastle City Council and developers Barratt, Keepmoat and Yuill.

Mr Hewitt added that the new Barratt jobs weren’t the only piece of good news for North East people in 2012.

He said: “The really great news this year is the return of 95 per cent mortgages for first-time buyers. This means that people who haven’t previously been able to raise the large deposit necessary to buy a place of their own could now buy a home from us with a deposit from as little as £4,900.”

Barratt has new homes at developments across the North East at prices from under £90,000 to £542,500.
